Terms of use
Version 1 · in force from 31 August 2026
The short version
- FieldFriend gives you agricultural advice. It is advice, not an instruction, and not a promise about your harvest.
- Some of it is written by an AI system and it can be wrong. Check anything that costs money or involves a chemical.
- Always follow the label on any product you buy, and the law where you farm.
- FieldFriend is free to farmers at present. Your network may still charge you for SMS or data.
- Do not use FieldFriend to harm anyone or to break the law.
1. Who you are agreeing with
FieldFriend is operated by Field Friend Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 17120050. In these terms, "we" and "us" mean Field Friend Ltd, and "you" means the person using the service.
These terms apply when you use the FieldFriend app, website, SMS service, WhatsApp service or partner dashboard. By using the service you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not use the service.
Contact: james@fieldfriend.africa.
2. What FieldFriend is
FieldFriend builds a plan for your growing season from published agricultural research, information about your farm, and local weather and soil data. It sends that plan to you, updates it as the season changes, and answers questions you ask about your crop.
We may change, suspend or withdraw any part of the service. FieldFriend is currently in pilot, which means parts of it will change without notice and some things will not work. We do not promise that it will be available without interruption.
3. The advice, and its limits
This is the most important section on this page, so it is written plainly rather than in legal language.
- FieldFriend gives you general agricultural guidance, adapted to what we know about your farm. It is a source of advice, in the same way an extension agent or a farming handbook is. It is not a substitute for your own judgement, for local professional advice, or for what you know about your own land.
- We do not guarantee any yield, income, price or outcome. Farming results depend on weather, pests, disease, soil, the quality of the seed and inputs you can get, labour, and decisions only you can make. Nothing in FieldFriend is a forecast of what you will earn.
- The advice can be wrong. Some of it is drafted by an artificial intelligence system working from a library of agricultural guides, and such systems make mistakes. Research findings also disagree with each other, and what is right in one place may be wrong a hundred kilometres away.
- Check anything that costs money or involves risk. Before you buy an input, apply a fertiliser or use any pesticide, herbicide or other agrochemical, read the product label, follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety directions, and comply with the law in your country. Where FieldFriend names a nutrient or a rate, the label on the product you actually buy takes priority over what we say.
- Weather information is a forecast. Rainfall onset and seasonal forecasts are estimates from third-party data and are frequently wrong. Do not treat them as certain.
- Talk to someone before a big decision. If a decision would put a significant part of your income at risk, discuss it with your local extension service, your cooperative or an agronomist before acting on FieldFriend alone.
If FieldFriend gives you advice that looks wrong, please tell your agent or write to us.
4. Your account
You need a phone number to register. You must give us accurate information, keep it up to date, and keep control of your own phone number and any code we send you. Do not let anyone else use your account, and tell us if you think someone has.
If a field agent registered you, they should have read the privacy policy to you in a language you understand and answered your questions before you agreed. If that did not happen, tell us.
You may close your account at any time by telling your agent or writing to us. We may suspend or close an account that is being used to break these terms, that appears to be fraudulent or duplicated, or where we are required to.
5. Cost
FieldFriend is currently free for farmers to use. Your mobile network may still charge you for the data, SMS or WhatsApp messages involved, at their own rates, and those charges are yours to pay.
If we ever introduce a charge for farmers, we will tell you before it applies and you will be able to stop using the service instead.
Where an organisation pays for FieldFriend on behalf of its farmers, the commercial terms are in our agreement with that organisation and are not affected by this page.
6. Acceptable use
You must not use FieldFriend to:
- break any law that applies to you;
- impersonate anyone, or register a person without their knowledge and agreement;
- send anything abusive, threatening, obscene or deliberately false;
- get advice intended to harm a person, an animal or land unlawfully;
- attack, overload, probe or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the service;
- scrape, copy or resell the content of the service, or use it to build a competing product.
7. Content and intellectual property
The FieldFriend software, the name, the logo, the plan format and the assembled guidance are ours or our licensors'. You may use the advice we give you freely for your own farming, and you may share it with other farmers. You may not republish the service or its content commercially without our written permission.
Information you give us about your farm stays yours. You give us permission to use it to run the service, and to use it in a form that does not identify you to improve the advice FieldFriend gives to everyone. The privacy policy explains this in full.
Some FieldFriend guidance is derived from third-party agricultural research published by institutions such as national extension services and international research centres. Those works remain the property of their authors, and we credit sources where we can.
8. Our responsibility to you
We take our advice seriously and work to make it accurate. But you use it at your own discretion, and to the fullest extent the law allows we are not liable for loss of crop, loss of yield, loss of profit, loss of income, wasted expenditure, or any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of FieldFriend or your reliance on its advice.
Where we are liable, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid us for the service in the twelve months before the claim, or one hundred pounds sterling, whichever is greater.
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. If you are a consumer, these terms do not affect your rights under the consumer law of the country where you live.
9. Privacy
How we handle your personal information is set out in our privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.
10. Changes
We may change these terms. If a change matters to you, we will tell you through the app or by message before it takes effect. Continuing to use FieldFriend after that means you accept the new version.
11. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory consumer law of your own country, or of the right to bring a claim in your local courts.
12. General
If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest continues to apply. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we do not lose the right to enforce it later. You may not transfer your rights under these terms to anyone else. We may transfer ours if the business is sold, without reducing your rights.
